Your first five turns of Commander are not supposed to win the game they are supposed to make sure you get to play one. This MTG Commander beginner guide gives you a practical turn-by-turn plan for land drops, ramp, setup, commander timing, interaction, combat, and threat assessment.

Turn 1: make the land drop that supports your next two turns. Turn 2: develop mana or play a cheap setup piece. Turn 3: invest in future turns with ramp, a draw engine, or a setup creature. By turns 4 and 5, keep at least one useful decision open instead of automatically tapping out for the biggest spell in your hand.

You will also learn why your commander does not need to be cast the moment it becomes available, how commander tax punishes careless timing, and why attacking the player with the highest life total is not automatically threat assessment.

What gives you the most trouble: land drops, developing mana, commander timing, holding interaction, or choosing attacks? Share your answer in the comments.
