Ep 35: The "Lean UX" Book is Neither Lean Nor UX
The "Lean UX" book was widely rejected by UX practitioners and experts, especially the second edition of the book. But this book was completely adopted by software dev approaches like SAFe Agile and Scrum.org. We'll take a look at why this book is so flawed, why UX pros would want to reject it, and why software dev and engineering wants to embrace it. Throw away your Lean UX Canvas. Learn why the Lean UX book is at the core of most of the anti-UX problems you have at your job.
Something I found out after I did this podcast: In my Office Hours/Ask Me Anything live stream, I got the question, “When would I use Lean UX and when would I use traditional UX?” This was from a visual designer in a 3-month UX boot camp. She said that they were learning to get a problem from a stakeholder and then start working with assumptions.
This is unfortunate, but tells us that you might also see a bump in the model from people who are in courses where UX is taught in a very shallow and non-scientific way. *Just do the least you can, do it as a team so you don’t have to put in too much real work, and work from assumptions… this is easy! Anybody can do this, get a certificate, and find that first job.*
I can’t even imagine this person in a job interview being asked to describe their UX process and talking about how they work from their own assumptions. Another reminder that we must speak up against all of these garbage and scammy boot camps.
