Creating Variable Labels and Value Labels in SPSS: Mastering Variables
We want any data set to be readable both by machines and by humans. Adding variable labels and value labels in IBM SPSS Statistics makes your data more easily interpretable. This will be especially important later on when you return to a dataset and can’t understand what it is because all of the variables are incoherent names and all of the values are just numbers.
Variable Labels are longer names for the variable that allow us to be much more descriptive (adding “Household income in thousands” to a variable simply named “Income”, for example.)
Value Labels code what the numbers in a dataset mean such as 1 = experimental group and 0 = control group. In addition to adding these labels, I will show you how to create a Codebook in SPSS so that you can see both the Variable Labels & Value Labels, plus additional details about the variables
