I'm sure this happened to you before when linking CAD backgrounds in your Revit project:
Large extents (Revit 20-mile warning)
Flat backgrounds are not as flat as they were supposed to be.
Graphic artifacts in your drawings
...

Follow these simple steps to get CAD files clean and ready to be linked in Revit.

Let me clarify: messy as in not ready to be used in Revit. Although I've seen CAD files that aren't necessarily drawn per best practices, it's not always a CAD issue. Either way, these issues need to be fixed.

I know a lot of us have standards about this, but I still thought it may help some. While this checklist is not universal, it covers all situations I've seen so far. This one doesn't cover shared coordinates, which I think should be addressed separately.

As with many BIM-related workflows communication is key, so if you do have the chance to coordinate this with the other discipline, that's ideal of course. It beats having to do a cleanup at every update.
