EATING BETEL NUTS | ADDICTIVE PLANT IN INDONESIA | TRAVEL VLOG

Indonesia has some great street food, and I'm always trying to hunt down the weirdest, strangest, most interesting foods I can find. This lead us to chewing on the Betel nut (not Beetle nut, though pronounced the same), a green golfball sized fruit of a Areca Palm, that is suppose to be addictive, and give you sexual prowess.
I first saw people chew it in Taiwan. There, it was so famous they made a documentary called Betel Nut Girls, which was about the naked girls standing on the side of the road selling them to truck drivers. All throughout Asia though, you can see the orange stains of betelnut juice on the streets, and all over the teeth of people of locals. It is consumed much like chewing tobacco, and slowly turns teeth orange, rots the gums, and causes cancer. Yum.
The up side of its effects is that it is a stimulant, and it keeps you awake. Also, the word on the street is that an orange smile is attractive. Locals chew away, spitting violently orange mouthfuls of saliva every few minutes, and look like they just took a bite out of someone's jugular vein. Sexy.
