When Elgato announced Wave Link 3.0, my first thought was simple: why version 3? They already had Wave Link. What could possibly be that different?
The answer is actually a big one.
Elgato Wave Link 3.0 is now completely free for everyone, and it works with any microphone. You no longer need a Wave mic. You no longer need a Stream Deck Plus to unlock the software. It’s a full digital mixer that anyone can download and use, whether you’re streaming, creating YouTube videos, or just trying to manage your audio more cleanly.
In this video, I walk you through the entire process from start to finish. We download it from the Elgato website, go through the installation, unplug and reconnect devices properly, and set everything up step by step. I explain how the monitor mix works, how to balance your microphone against your PC audio, and how to make sure your headphones are giving you the right feedback while you’re recording or streaming.
From there, we get into the powerful part: mixes.
Personal Mix, Stream Mix, and Chat Mix can look intimidating at first, but once you understand how they route audio, everything starts to make sense. I show you how to send your microphone into OBS using OBS Studio, how to mute system sounds from your stream, how to separate games, browser audio, Discord, music, and even editing software into their own channels. You’ll also see how to group multiple games into a single “Games” track and control them together.
We also look at built-in effects like compressor, EQ, low cut, and Voice Focus for AI noise removal, and how you can apply them differently to your personal mix, stream mix, or chat mix.
If you’ve ever used Voicemeeter Banana, you know how complicated free audio routing software can be. Wave Link 3.0 feels like a much cleaner and more beginner-friendly alternative, without sacrificing control.
Even though you don’t need Elgato hardware anymore, I also show how it integrates with devices like the Elgato Wave XLR and talk briefly about the newer models like the Elgato Wave XLR Pro.
What makes this update exciting isn’t just the features. It’s the fact that powerful, professional-level audio routing is now accessible to everyone for free.
