After the end of World War II in the USSR, which had the largest fleet of armored trains, the process of their gradual withdrawal from the army began. Among the military, a point of view was established that such military equipment no longer has prospects. True, part of the armor was transferred to the troops of the NKVD, who used them to guard the railways in the Baltic States and Western Ukraine, where they carried out a patrol service in readiness to suppress with their fire possible attacks by "forest brothers" on railway facilities.
By the end of the fifties, Soviet armored trains of the war were written off (the last in 1958) and disposed of. Only individual specimens who went to museums and film studios of the country were lucky. But, as it turned out, the history of the Soviet armored trains was not yet finished. The hot war was replaced by a cold one — on the western borders of the socialist camp, there was restlessness, which cost only the Berlin crisis (one of the most tense moments of the Cold War in Central Europe, caused by N. S. Khrushchev’s ultimatum of November 27, 1958). And in the early 1960s. and on the eastern borders of the USSR a distinct smell of powder — the situation on the Soviet-Chinese border became tense. The history of Soviet-Chinese relations in the second half of the XX century. wore controversial. The victory of the Chinese Communists in the civil war in 1949 was perceived as a significant success in the struggle against imperialism, and the PRC was then considered the most important ally of the USSR in building the world socialist system. Accordingly, in the 1950s. The USSR developed friendly relations with the PRC, including actively implementing technical assistance in the industrialization of the country. Assistance was also provided with military equipment - for example, the 39th Army almost ran out of Port Arthur, leaving all the equipment and supplies of a powerful military base as a gift to the Chinese friends.
Taking into account the fact that “brotherly China” was on the other side of the border, Soviet troops in the Far East and Transbaikalia were considered “rear” and in the post-war years they were constantly shrinking - the 6th Guards Tank Army from Daurian steppes moved to Ukraine, regiments and divisions disbanded. Moreover, fortified areas (UR) were dismantled, stocks of strategic materials were reduced to a minimum.
