If you've ever heard of the Cambrian explosion, you'll know that it's an intriguing phenomenon, due to the enormous diversification of life, even though before the Cambrian, there were virtually no multicellular animals.
And for a long time, the transition from the microbial world of the Precambrian to the emergence of the Cambrian fauna remained a mystery.

💥 The fascinating Ediacaran period:
It's 1946 in Ediacara, a mountainous region of southern Australia. Fossils are discovered buried and well-preserved in rock layers dating back hundreds of millions of years and belonging to no known geological era. This exploration is full of surprises.
At first glance, the Ediacara rocks are unremarkable. Except that they tell the story of the Earth in chronological order. Thanks to these rocks, we have been able to answer questions that have remained unanswered until now, particularly those related to the origin of life on Earth.
Meanwhile, analyses are underway to pinpoint the exact age of the geological formations and determine the age of the newly discovered fossils. It's worth noting that similar organisms had already been discovered elsewhere, but at the time, they had been attributed, without much conviction, to Cambrian fauna.
Stratigraphic, paleontological, relative, and radiometric dating studies, combined with examination of the organisms discovered at Ediacara, revealed that they do not originate from the Cambrian, but rather from an earlier period.
The chemical composition, texture, and layering of the rocks clearly indicated that the geological formations examined dated to a period between -635 and -541 million years BCE. What if we had learned about an unknown period in our past, between the Precambrian and the Cambrian?
Today, we know this period as the Ediacaran. A recently discovered epoch, but one that embodies the very birth of life on Earth.
The fossils discovered at Ediacara, Australia, date to the end of the Precambrian super-eon, the first and longest period in Earth's history, spanning 4 billion years.
It is also the least known, as very few direct records exist from this remote era.
With the discovery of the Ediacaran, we were able to uncover vestiges of the past and unravel the mystery of the Precambrian.
In 1957, while fossil studies continued, a momentous event occurred in Charnwood, England. Among the rare and protected species found in the forest's geological formations was the fossil Charnia masoni.
This fossil visibly resembled fossils previously discovered in South Australia, particularly in the Ediacaran shales, and in Namibia in the 1930s, which at the time seemed devoid of any trace of life.
