Sonya monologue Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov
I took the liberty of translating the final monologue of Sonya from “Uncle Vanya”, since my attempts to find a decent translation were fruitless. Maybe I wasn’t searching hard enough, though. Chekhov has such a unique pacing and phrasing that literal translation of his words simply doesn’t cut it, and too loose of an interpretation smooths out the differences between cultures. I haven’t translated texts in very a long time, so working with such meaty material felt both challenging and refreshing...
