The founders of Kano, a computer kit that can be made by children as young as six believe the UK's tech future is dependent on learning how computers actually work, not just how to use them.

It is something the Department for Education agrees with and as of September 2014, the UK will be the first G20 country to put coding at the centre of education reform.

A new national curriculum for computing will require children aged between five and 16 to learn how to write computer programmes. The education secretary Michael Gove and Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne have launched a new campaign, the Year of Code, designed to raise awareness and interest in computing.

"There are hundreds of thousands of teachers out there in the UK and around the world who are saying 'Yes. Great. We'd love to bring coding and technological creativity into the classroom but we were never taught this'," says Alex Klein, co-founder of computer kit company, Kano.
