In this video I go over RV tips on buying an RV for the first time.
There are several questions you need to ask yourself before you buy a travel trailer, fifth wheel, or motorhome.
Are you buying an RV to live in or just to use part time?
Do you need a lot of space or is space not an issue?
Are you staying in one place more then a month at a time or are you going to be traveling most of the time?
If you're going to be part time and you do not need a lot of space then I recommend a travel trailer, these can be pulled with most 1/2 ton pickup trucks, make sure you're under the towing capacity first.
If you want a lot of space then the 5th wheel is the way to go, IF you're going to live full time and stay in one place at a time.
A fifth wheel will have more living area then a motorhome, and you can add more amenities like a full size washer dryer if you buy a toy hauler.
If you go with a fifth wheel you WILL need to buy a pickup truck that is capable of pulling the loaded weight of your 5th wheel. Research, research, research!
Now what about motorhomes? You have 3 classes, Class A which is your biggest class, either with gas or diesel. If you can afford it I recommend a diesel, more torque and better MPG then a gas.
Class B, which is your MID size MH and also has option of gas or diesel.
Then you have Class C, which is your smallest and is usually the size of a large van. Also comes with the gas or diesel option.
You have to ask yourself how much room do I need?
Do you need creature comforts?
Do you like luxury?
Class A then all the way!
Motorhomes are great for people who want to full time but also want to travel majority of the time. With a motorhome there is no constant hooking and unhooking like a fifth wheel or travel trailer, unless you're pulling a vehicle behind which takes minutes.
Basically it comes down to preference, take a trip to your local RV dealer and see what feels right.
I looked at RV's for a solid year before narrowing my choice down, so do your research about the brand you're buying and read the forums of owners who currently own the model you want to buy.
Buying an RV to live in is expensive so make sure the first you one is buy is the last one for years to come!
