In this math video we will discover how to analyze qualitative graphs. We will analyze a graph of a functional relationship between two quantities, identify where and/or if a function is increasing or decreasing, and describe qualitative features of a function. Our focus will be the guiding question - How can you describe a relationship between two quantities qualitatively? We will begin by review key vocabulary terms. Qualitative graph - a graph, without numbers, that represents a function visually. Intervals - space between events; segments representing the domain (inputs or x values). Linear - straight lines or segments. Nonlinear - curved lines or segments. Increasing - curving or slanting upward. Decreasing - curving or slanting downward. Constant - unchanging, flat or horizontal. We will begin by analyzing section of a qualitative graph. We will understand that the graph is a relationship between two quantities. We will identify sections of a graph as increasing, decreasing and constant. We will review how to determine if a section of a graph is linear or nonlinear. We will understand how to describe a nonlinear section as increasing at an increasing rate and a linear section as increasing at a constant rate. We will discuss how to identify a constant or horizontal section of the graph and understand what it means in a real world scenario. We will understand how to read a graph with intervals and how to identify specific intervals. We will interpret graphs using a real world scenario to answer questions. Exemplar solutions are modeled and explained. Student practice is embedded in the lesson.

8.F.B.5 Describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two quantities by analyzing a graph (e.g., where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear). Sketch a graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a function that has been described verbally.
