Antwerp 1944, the city liberated by the Belgian Resistance
The port of Antwerp in Belgium was the only major city in Europe liberated by an internal uprising from the armed insurgency against the Axis. The rebellion, led by just under 3,500 Belgian Resistance fighters, resulted in the complete reduction of the German garrison and prevented the Germans from destroying the port facilities and shipyards that were essential for maintaining the uninterrupted logistics of the Allied Expeditionary Force embarking from France.
