Beneath the streets of the Iranian city of Nushabad, five kilometers from Kashan, lies one of the largest underground cities in the ancient world. Built by the Sassanids 1,500 years ago, the city of Ouyi has three levels, over 15,000 square meters of corridors, and a ventilation system that still operates today. Discovered accidentally in the early 2000s, it remained completely unknown for centuries, even to its own inhabitants. In this video, we examine four seemingly impossible things: how no one knew of its existence, how it was built without machines, how it protected itself from Mongol invaders, and why most of the city still awaits discovery beneath an active mosque and bazaar.
