Tuckaleechee Caverns is in Townsend TN. It is privately owned and operated by the Vananda family. It is listed as “The greatest site under the Smokies”. They do guided tours throughout the day. The hike through the caverns is 1.25 miles and takes about an hour and a half. Climbing 400 steps, not all at the same time. You can see the tallest underground waterfall in the Eastern United States, 210 ft “Silver Falls” and stalagmites reaching over 24 feet as well as other amazing rock formations.
The caverns were first opened in 1931 by Earl McCampbell. But soon closed after because of the impact of the Great Depression. Reopened in 1953 by Bill Vananda and Harry Myers using lanterns for tours until they added electricity.
The caverns were originally used by the Cherokee. Then rediscovered by sawmill employees.
