Here is one of the most imposing dog breeds, named after its city of origin in southern Germany.
The Leonberger is distinguished by its balanced proportions. Males typically measure 78 to 80 cm at the withers (the standard specifies 72 to 80 cm), while females reach 72 cm (65 to 75 cm according to the standard). The average weight is around 50 kg for females and 60 kg for males.
The strong, straight, and broad back extends into a relatively long and gently rounded croup. The oval-shaped chest is deep, reaching at least to the elbows.
The Leonberger has a beautiful coat with fairly long, thick hair and an abundant undercoat. The fur exhibits significant variations in shade, from light fawn, almost sandy, to charcoal fawn. A powerful neck and a confident gait complete the picture.
