I Can See Clearly Now, The Brain is Gone: Tissue Clearing as a Tool To Visualize Neuronal Projections and Pathways
What looks like a video of a dense cloud of bright stars in the night sky is actually thousands of glowing neurons in a three-dimensional mouse brain. This universe of imaging has been made possible by new techniques that can turn brain tissue translucent. Scientists can then use chemical labels to light up specific types of cells or activity in 3-D. These techniques reveal details such as the path of a single neuron in the brain or what areas of the brain are active under various conditions.
