DayZ Mod is a free multiplayer modification for the computer game ArmA 2 and its expansion, ArmA 2: Operation Arrowhead, developed by Bohemia Interactive. The modification was created by New Zealand game designer Dean Hall, a Bohemia Interactive employee, as a fan-made add-on. On August 8, 2012, it was announced that Bohemia Interactive would develop the modification into a standalone game.
DayZ is an open-world survival horror game. The modification takes place in the fictional post-Soviet state of Chernarus, whose inhabitants have been transformed into aggressive zombies as a result of a cataclysm. The player-controlled character must survive in a hostile environment, avoiding enemies and scavenging weapons and supplies from abandoned buildings. The character faces threats not only from computer-controlled zombies and other players, but also from natural factors such as hunger, thirst, injury, and disease. Death in the game is permanent and irreversible—upon a character's death, the player is prompted to restart the game, creating a new character and starting stockpiling supplies from scratch.
