In curling, sweeping the ice in front of a moving granite stone is a key element in controlling its motion, relying on the physical properties of ice and friction. The surface of the lane is specially prepared using a technique called "pebbling." Microdroplets of water are applied to the ice, freezing to form a rough texture. The stone contacts these microroughnesses rather than a smooth surface, creating controlled friction.

When players intensively scrub the ice with their brushes, the surface temperature increases locally (by fractions of a degree). This leads to a partial smoothing of the microroughnesses and the formation of a thin water film. As a result, the coefficient of friction decreases, and the stone begins to glide further and more steadily. Thus, sweeping directly affects the distance of the stone's movement.

Sweeping also allows for the correction of the stone's trajectory. In curling, the stone is launched with a spin, causing it to naturally deflect to the side (the "curl effect"). Intensive sweeping reduces this deviation, making the trajectory straighter. Asymmetrical sweeping (on one side) can slightly adjust the direction of movement.

Scientifically, this is a combination of thermal effects, changes in the surface microrelief, and friction management. It is thanks to this mechanism that players can precisely control the movement of a heavy stone over distances of tens of meters, turning curling into a complex game that combines physics, precision, and strategy.
