Chasing protip: Choose the LCL happy medium somewhere between 1000-1500m AGL for the best results for the camera!

The Lifted Condensation Level (LCL) is the height at which air cools enough for condensation to occur, forming the storm’s cloud base. It’s determined by surface temperature and moisture—drier conditions lead to higher LCLs, while more humid air keeps them lower. A lower LCL means cloud bases are closer to the ground, while a higher LCL results in storms with elevated bases.

For storm chasers, an LCL between 1000-1500m is the sweet spot. This range often leads to photogenic storms with well-defined structure, crisp updraft bases, and dramatic supercell features. If the LCL is too high, storms may struggle to organize, and tornado formation becomes less likely. Too low, and storms can appear messy and rain-wrapped, limiting visibility. The right balance creates those stunning, sculpted supercells that every chaser hopes to capture!
