Here are 5 ways to crop an image with GIMP, in order of usefulness.
The crop tool can be selected from the toolbar, pressing Shift + C, or going through the menu.

There are settings to allow you to crop a layer, set an aspect ratio, precisely set a position and size of a crop, auto shrink, enable guides, and to grow a canvas.

Crop to Selection will crop to the outer bounds of a selection. I demonstrate with the rectangle tool, but any selection method will work. Feathered selections will not be cropped.

Crop to Content is the same as performing an autocrop. It is useful for removing borders from an image.

Zealous Crop will crop the middle of an image. It will remove any excess space between other elements.

Changing the canvas size is more useful for making it larger. It's a way to recover previously cropped parts of an image if they haven't been deleted.
