Russia successfully test-launched its Zircon also known as Tsirkon hypersonic cruise missile from the Project 22350 warship Admiral Gorshkov.
The test took place this weekend.
In a statement, Russia's defence ministry said: "The tests of the Zircon hypersonic missile are also being successfully completed.
It added further, "Test launches from the Admiral Gorshkov frigate have confirmed the unique tactical and technical characteristics of this missile in terms of range and accuracy of fire, as well as its hypersonic flight speed.”
AsiaTimes reported, Admiral Gorshov sailed from Belomorsky Naval Base last week reportedly to conduct the test firing of Zircon.
The timing of the test coincided with Russian president Vladimir Putin’s announcement that the Russian Navy would be armed with hypersonic nuclear strike weapons as well as underwater nuclear drones.
As per reports from the Reuters , President Putin during Sunday’s Main Navy Parade in St. Petersburg stated,
“The widespread deployment of advanced digital technologies that have no equals in the world, including hypersonic strike systems and underwater drones, will give the fleet unique advantages and increased combat capabilities,”
The Russian Ministry of Defense has previously said both weapons are in the final phase of testing
The test is a milestone and is a major step when it comes to deploying hypersonic weapons.
