In today’s video, I’m showcasing the latest progress of my Unity 6 project: a massive-scale recreation of Wrocław, Poland, powered by OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. Watch how the newest Unity engine handles large-scale city rendering and complex procedural building generation in real-time!
The most important part? This project is built entirely from scratch. I decided to challenge myself and NOT use any existing middleware or third-party SDKs.
This is a 100% custom implementation – NO use of:
osm2world
Mapbox Unity SDK
Cesium for Unity
ArcGIS Maps SDK
WRLD / wrld3d
By writing my own custom OSM importer, I have full control over the data pipeline, mesh optimization, and how the city scales within the new Unity 6 environment.
The project focuses on leveraging raw OSM data to create a high-performance game world. Thanks to the new features in Unity 6 (like the improved GPU Resident Drawer and better SRP performance), I’ve achieved significantly higher frame rates and better memory management.
In this video, you’ll see:
High Geometry Stress Test: How Unity 6 manages millions of polygons during a flyover.
Iconic Landmarks: A look at Wrocław’s Market Square (Rynek), Ostrów Tumski, and the Sky Tower.
Procedural Systems: My custom logic for generating buildings and road networks from raw coordinates.
