Passat B3. Thermostat. Replacement with an 80-degree one.
I was tired of adding antifreeze because the engine was overheating, so I decided to change the thermostat. And not just any thermostat, but one that operated at 80 degrees instead of 87. However, I didn't know at the time that the thermostat wasn't the issue.
