Remembering Alex Trebek (1940-2020)
2020 has come with a lot of losses, but today I think a lot of us have suffered a very big loss.
This morning the legendary Canadian-American host of the beloved game show "Jeopardy!" and TV personality, Alex Trebek, has died at the age of 80 after battling pancreatic cancer for over a year. (A few months earlier, former Congressman John Lewis also died after battling pancreatic cancer as well.)
As stated before, Alex was the host of Jeopardy! from the very beginning in 1984, and he's managed to become a television icon and a beloved person.
There's many reasons why he's an absolute legend. Alex has spent approximately 50 years in the public eye as a celebrity, but not once was there ever a scandal about him. His whole job is about correcting people and he is still the most likable guy on TV. Not to mention that while his duties on Jeopardy! are strict, he knows how to put in some good laughs and fun humor.
Personally, I have grown up with Jeopardy throughout my life. In fact, my father and I used to watch him a lot and I would try to guess some of the answers. Of course, I didn't get all of them right but I still enjoyed seeing him on TV and hearing his voice.
Not to mention, Alex Trebek has starred in a couple of shows from my childhood. He has appeared on The Simpsons, Family Guy, Sesame Street, Arthur, and Rugrats. He even hosted an April Fools episode of Wheel of Fortune (it helps that both shows were from ABC).
Nevertheless, Alex Trebek was never afraid of dying when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and he still managed to keep it in and continue doing what he enjoys doing. He is a very extraordinary man and a one of a kind person, and I will greatly miss him a whole lot.
Jeopardy! will never be the same without him. Rest well, Alex. We love you.
