Method: FEM simulation with topology optimization
A conventional design of a bracket is compared to a redesign based on topology optimization. First, the stresses and the deformation of the original design are evaluated for a representative load case. Then a design space is created which represents all the available space which may be used for the bracket. The most efficient material distribution is calculated with topology optimization using the Tosca functionality in Femap with NX Nastran. Based on the organic structure which is obtained, a redesign is made in CAD, and re-analyzed in Femap to compare the stresses and deformations. Material reduction: 22%. Stiffness increase: 200%. Stress reduction: 50%.
