Rembrandt's Anatomy Lesson
You’ve seen the image: Rembrandt’s painting "The Anatomy Lesson." Painted in 1632 for the Guild of Surgeons, Amsterdam, the image shows Dr. Tulp, standing behind a corpse, lecturing to seven bearded students. In his illustrated talk, the Festival’s artistic director emeritus, Lawrence Weschler, uses Rembrandt’s masterpiece as a jumping-off point for all manner of fresh twists and reimagined visions, spinning a web of iconographic speculation and associations ranging from Jesus Christ to Che Guevara.
