Question of the Day!

What are the clinical uses of Ciprofloxacin in the outpatient setting?

Answer:

You can remember the clinical uses of Ciprofloxacin with the mnemonic - "CIPRO, is the name of my PET DUCK." Remember “PET DUCK.”

PET DUCK stands for the following:
P – for Prostatitis in both Acute and Chronic types with no STD risk, P is also for Pyelonephritis (as an outpatient treatment), and P is also for first-line treatment for Pseudomonal Pneumonia for patients with cystic fibrosis.
E – for Epididymitis in patients with no STD risk and E for Otitis Externa.
T – for Traveler’s diarrhea.

D – for Diverticulitis (Ciprofloxacin is combined with Flagyl) – for higher-risk patients or immunocompromised patients.
U – for UTI (particularly complicated UTI).
C – for Cutaneous Anthrax and Postexposure Prophylaxis of Inhaling Anthrax Spores.
and
K – for coverage of Klebsiella organism infections and Kidney infection (Cipro is an outpatient treatment for Pyelonephritis).

Also, remember your daily mantra - "I Will Do Well in This Exam!"
