Discussing Biblical Interpolations And Historical Jesus Facts w/ Dr. Bart Ehrman
In this Interview, I talked to Dr. Bart Ehrman about how we can detect interpolations and how we can ascertain historical facts from the New Testament. We start off with interpolations and how we know something has been added to the Biblical text. Bart discusses how he is going to be lecturing about one interpolation that is generally not discussed. That interpolation is the last word said by Jesus on the cross. Then we go into how to discern historical facts in the New Testament. The one we kind of focus on is Jesus' death on the cross. I try to figure out how we know that to be a fact. Bart first mentions that nobody would have made up a suffering, dying, and humiliated savior. I give him some pushback on the idea that some Jews wouldn't have accepted such a messiah pointing out Daniel Boyarin and Martin Hengel as two scholars who have identified a pre-Christian suffering and dying messiah motif that was easily accepted by some Jews. We get into a somewhat heated discussion on the topic which ends with Bart mentioning other ways we know Jesus is crucified.
