In this video, the author expresses the opinion that music schools' focus on repertoire in the lower grades plays an extremely negative role. This repertoire-centric approach leads teachers to a situation where they don't have enough time to master rhythm, playing technique, develop music reading skills, and develop basic theoretical concepts—precisely what is needed in the lower grades. Instead, instead of instilling fundamental knowledge and skills, teachers are forced to focus on repertoire tests from the first grade onward. The author questions why repertoire requirements have become more important than the learning process itself.
