A brief discussion on ideas and tips for sequencing in medical coding, by a veteran medical coder. (DISCLAIMER These are just my views and are not the views of any medical coding Association.)
How do you decide which diagnoses To sequence 1st? Always look at the reason that the patient came in; why did they come in? And go from there. Look at what the provider is treating most pressing. What is out of control?
One thing I forgot to mention from our injury scenario was the Place of occurrence and activity codes. They can be sequenced after the external cause code for the motor vehicle accident. It also depends on your facility so be sure to ask because some may have you put it with all of the injury codes and some may have you anchor those place of occurrence and activity codes at the very end. Be sure to ask! :)

Appendix E in the ICD-10-CM Book has the complete list of principal/first listed Z codes! If any of those are the reason the patient is coming in be sure to sequence 1st!
