Dear Pentatonix… We challenge you to an #ImprovJam.
You sing a capella. We dance to it. ALL MADE UP ON THE SPOT.
And filmed for all to see.
____________
FULL LETTER:
Dear Scott, Mitch, Kirstin, Kevin, and Avi (aka Pentatonix),
This last January, I was finally able to see you in concert after being a fan for many years. I came to your show at the Santa Barbara Bowl and bought tickets to the meet-and-greet. I got a picture with you and briefly interacted with each of you (I still tell everyone who will listen how Kevin complimented my earrings). You were every bit as kind, welcoming, and humble as I had hoped. This is why I feel that you are the perfect people to approach about participating in a special challenge.
This is a video of a “social dance”, or an improvised partner dance, by my friend Imaan and myself in the middle of the Ikea in Orange County.
When people think of partner dancing, they usually think of Dancing With the Stars -- professionals dancing to put on a choreographed show for others.
They don’t think of social dancing -- regular people dancing to connect with one another... And it’s all improvised.
Like a capella, social dancing enables people to connect with each other on a primal level that transcends ethnic, political, sexual, or religious boundaries and gets to the core of who we are as human beings.
People unfortunately don’t know that there is an entire underground culture of social dancing with different styles (salsa, swing, tango, etc.) that thousands of people around the world take part in every day.
We started #TheOmniMovement, an endeavor to make social dancing more accessible around the world, because we believe “Anyone can dance with anyone, anywhere, and to anything” and it can feel freaking amazing.
Why am I telling you all of this? You have done what many once said was impossible -- you brought a cappella into the mainstream and influenced so many lives for the better because of it. Music has a similar power to connect and heal others. That is why we feel that you, better than anyone, will be able to understand our mission and consider the following challenge.
Imaan and I, as part #TheOmniMovement, would like to challenge you to a PTX + Omni #ImprovJam.
You would do what you do best -- create music -- entirely on the spot.
And we would do what we do best -- create dance -- to your music, entirely on the spot.
We would film this collaboration and make it public for all to see.
I hope that you will decide to be a part of this project and assist us in spreading awareness of the incredible world of #SocialDancing.
And thank you so much for bringing me so much joy over the last three years.
Sincerely,
Elena “The Rhinestone” Rovito
P.S. Many might wonder which take this was. It was the first of two total takes. If you don’t believe us, let’s jam and you can find out!
