Interior Doors - Adventures in Homebuilding (home info with a smile)
When choosing new doors for the inside of your home, remember there are different types of interior doors:
A hollow core door is lightweight and inexpensive, but can’t tolerate much abuse.
MDF doors—made of “medium density fiber” board are inexpensive and have a paint grade finish. They are also available in raised panel styles that mimic more expensive solid wood doors.
Solid wood doors are the beautiful, but the most expensive. If a solid wood door features a raised panel, the panel should be made of plywood to prevent the shrinkage and cracking associated with solid wood.
Pay attention to the way doors are attached to the door-frame. Cheaper doors only have two hinges. These doors are more likely to warp. Good or medium-grade doors have three hinges. Oversized doors require four hinges to support the added weight.
