Rectal suppository administration is a common nursing procedure used to relieve constipation, reduce fever, or deliver medication when oral intake is not possible.
Before the procedure, explain the process to the patient or caregiver, ensure privacy, and perform hand hygiene. Place the patient in the left lateral (Sim’s) position with knees flexed. Wear clean gloves and lubricate the suppository tip. Gently insert the suppository into the rectum beyond the anal sphincter (about 2–4 cm in infants and children, 3–5 cm in adults). Ask the patient to remain lying for a few minutes to prevent expulsion.
After the procedure, remove gloves, perform hand hygiene, provide comfort, and document the medication, time, dose, and patient response. Always follow hospital protocol and physician’s order.
