I was using a Canon LiDE 210 scanner, and during scanning, the process suddenly failed. Restarting the PC did not help. Surprisingly, the scanner worked perfectly on another Windows user account, which confirmed the issue was not the scanner or driver.
The real problem was a corrupted Windows user profile.
In this video, I show how deleting the affected user profile and logging in again completely fixed the issue.
