Vietnam is straw hats, smiling people, delicious coffee, authentic French baguettes, bottle dragons, Catholic churches, and a breath of socialist culture.
What can you see in a week in a new country when you're on a beach vacation?
It turns out, a lot, if you can't sit still.
We flew into Cam Ranh Airport and stayed at a hotel five minutes away. The Anam Hotel is a true green oasis on the coast of the South China Sea. If you look at it from the neighboring skyscraper hotel, you see a huge patch of jungle. A subscriber was relaxing nearby and sent a photo from above.
The hotel is very cozy. It has charming bungalows and tropical trees surrounding each house. The staff is helpful and kind. The food is delicious. The sea was rough, but it was a real pleasure to be near it.
To finally see the country and take some photos for the audience, we took a private tour to Dalat. The guide and driver took us over the mountain pass and returned us to the hotel in the evening. The drive was long, three hours each way. But it was interesting. The serpentine roads and the local driving style were very invigorating.
In Dalat, we visited the so-called Crazy House. An eccentric architect built a house-hotel inspired by Gaudi's buildings. You can live in the rooms. They are all different – they look like sets for a cartoon.
Then we walked across a glass bridge and stopped at a temple built from shards of broken crockery and glass. It was something completely unusual.
We took a bus from the hotel to Nha Trang. We ran through the main sights. Well, we ran through them. We took a taxi. They're quite inexpensive there.
The Cham Towers of Po Nagar are a marvel of architecture and antiquity within the city limits. They're over 1,000 years old and look powerful and dignified. They're a very photographable place, and for believers, a sacred place.
You have to climb a winding staircase to reach the White Buddha at Long Son Pagoda. It seemed far away from the bottom. In fact, we didn't even notice how we found ourselves at the top. Halfway up, you can catch your breath next to the reclining Buddha. It's also enormous and peaceful.
There's a Catholic cathedral in Nha Trang. Enormous. A real one. Built during the French colonization. It's amazing that around the temple there are numerous plaques with Vietnamese names. It's a real cemetery. These were the first Vietnamese Catholics. They were buried next to the temple, and during the construction of the railway, their remains were cremated and moved into the temple wall.
We have the warmest memories of this trip. We want to go back and travel there. There's so much to see in Vietnam.
