How Does an Emergency Brake Work? How Do Train Brakes Work?
In this video, we'll learn how the emergency brake valve works and also understand how train brakes work.
The emergency brake valve operates on pneumatic brakes, relying primarily on the presence or absence of pressure in the system. This means that if the emergency brake valve is released, the pressure will drop, and the train's hydraulic brakes will initiate emergency braking. The brakes on a train car are designed to activate the hydraulic brakes in an emergency, bringing the train to a stop if the emergency brake valve is released. Freight train brakes, like passenger train brakes, are designed similarly. Incidentally, airplanes also have emergency brake valves; we'll discuss this at the end of the video.
