The propeller solves a problem that many people don't even know exists.

Where does the thrust go when a propeller spins very fast? Towards this side?

That's what I initially thought too, but it's not true. Depending on the direction of rotation, the propeller is actually pushed slightly to the right or left. (Sources 3, 4)

The principle of action and reaction – a Newtonian law! When air is moved by angled rotating rotor blades, an angled thrust force is also exerted on the aircraft.

This, of course, also affects the aerodynamics of an aircraft. Hardly anyone knows this, but small propeller-driven aircraft actually fly slightly at an angle for precisely this reason.

They have to counteract the torque – compensate for the effect!


Of course, experienced pilots can easily manage this, but efficiency, performance, and control are lost! This problem also exists with boats. So how did this propeller solve the problem?

In the past, someone had a brilliant idea. If a propeller generates a drag force depending on its direction of rotation, why not use a second propeller?

A propeller that rotates in the opposite direction, thus inverting and balancing the drag force of the first?
