This is the second of our ‘Working at Scale’ course with Dixon Jones and Ken McGaffin.
You really don't want to do just a standard pitch – that’s what every competitor is likely to do. If you want to stand out, you need to customize your pitch to show your client how you would earn them backlinks.
Your pitch needs to demonstrate that you're 10 steps ahead of anybody else who might also be pitching.
It's worth investing in your pitch because it gives you power, and adds to the attractiveness of your pitch - if you're telling them something that they don't know.
Start by setting up a campaign in Majestic – even at this early stage.
That means finding four or five competitor websites, adding your potential client and putting all their home pages into a new campaign. This gives you a great backlinks summary and an ability to immediately compare backlinks data, side by side.
That gives you some great visuals and top-level information that will impress your client – and show them you’ve taken the pitch seriously.
Another good reason is that from a campaign you can instantly jump into all the other tools as you wish. That saves a lot of time and sets you up for success!
And don’t forget to set up email alerts to automatically send you details of new links acquired by all the sites in your campaign. Even at this pitch stage, that might give you backlink data that can make a positive impression on your client.
Dixon explains why he likes to work with homepage metrics, as opposed to whole domain metrics. According to Dixon, “Here's the thing, the way that the algorithms work at Google, PageRank was always done at the page level. The truth of the matter is that Google thinks your homepage is probably the best page on your website.
And each individual page on your website is a page on the internet. When Google search results come back, they don't give you websites, they give you individual pages. It may be a homepage, it may not be a homepage, but they give you individual pages. So, if you're trying to do search engine optimization, it's an important thing to understand the Google returning pages, not sites.
In the next video in this series, Dixon and Ken will be exploring how Majestic can enhance any SEO audit, and give you additional backlink data that other agencies are unlikely to have.
