David Murcia Guzmán was born in 1980 in Ubaté, a small municipality in Cundinamarca, Colombia. He grew up in a humble home, facing the economic hardships that marked his childhood from a young age. However, these adversities did not dampen his entrepreneurial spirit. From a young age, David showed a natural knack for business, selling candy and small items to earn some extra money.
After finishing his elementary school, he decided to move to Bogotá in search of better opportunities. The big city offered a wide range of possibilities, and David soon found work as an appliance salesman. It was in this position that he began honing his sales and marketing skills, standing out for his charisma and ability to convince customers. But his ambition wasn't satisfied with a regular job; he wanted more.
Inspired by the multi-level sales systems and loyalty programs he learned about during his job, he began to devise his own business model. He realized he could offer more than simple discounts or promotions. He wanted to create a system where people not only bought products but could also generate income by recommending others. Thus, the seed of what would later become DMG was born.
In 2003, with just a few savings and an ambitious vision, David founded DMG (David Murcia Guzmán). Initially, DMG offered prepaid cards that allowed customers to accumulate points redeemable for products, services, or even cash. The idea was simple but revolutionary: to transform everyday consumption into a source of income. The key to success lay in the referral model, where users could earn commissions by inviting others to join.
News of DMG's system spread like wildfire. People from all walks of life were attracted by the promise of quick and accessible income. In a short time, DMG expanded nationally and then internationally, reaching countries such as Panama, Ecuador, and Venezuela. Its offices were modern and luxurious, designed to reflect an image of success and prosperity.
However, its rapid rise also raised suspicions. While thousands praised Murcia's ingenuity, authorities began to question the sustainability of the business model. It was alleged that DMG operated as a pyramid scheme, where profits depended primarily on recruiting new members rather than on the sale of actual products.
In 2008, after an intensive investigation, the Colombian government declared DMG illegal, and David Murcia Guzmán was arrested, facing charges of money laundering and fundraising. The news shocked the country, dividing opinions between those who saw him as a visionary and those who considered him a con man.
