We are a remote pasture measuring service that utilises satellite technology to optimise your pasture management and animal nutrition. Founded on our CEO’s family dairy farm, our app integrates satellite data, weather information, and paddock activities to provide you with precise pasture covers and growth rates. Our system helps you enhance both your animal and pasture performance by aligning nutritional feed requirements with your herd’s needs.
How Pasture.io Works
Our service collects data from three main sources: satellites, weather, and paddock activities. Satellite imagery provides various colour bands and other essential data, while local weather information includes rainfall, temperature, and other climatic factors. Your paddock activities—such as fertilisation and grazing events—feed into our machine-learning models, producing detailed pasture metrics like growth rates and leaf emergence rates. We also include a cloudy days model to maintain data accuracy even when satellite visibility is poor.
Accuracy and Crop Compatibility
We offer high accuracy in pasture measurement, with a variance of just 50-60 kilograms of dry matter per hectare—outperforming traditional methods like the rising plate meter. Our models are primarily trained on ryegrass-clover swards but have also proven successful with other crops such as millet, oats, and kikuyu. However, results for crops like lucerne or chicory are still considered experimental due to their different growth patterns.
Continuous Improvement and Customization
Our system continuously improves as you enter more data, particularly after your first grazing round and fertiliser applications. Each paddock develops its own model, adapting to specific conditions such as moisture levels and shading. You can track pasture consumption at the cow level and generate reports for detailed analysis. Looking ahead, we are working on developments such as variable rate application and advanced analytics to further enhance your pasture management.
