Creating the Universe on a Computer: How we use simulations to study galaxies, by Michael Tremmel
Not all astronomy is done with a telescope. Large-scale computer simulations, run on high performance computing facilities around the world, provide an unique view of the cosmos as well as crucial theoretical predictions that inform astronomical observations. In this public lecture to Cork Astronomy Club on 17 April, 2023, Dr. Michael Tremmel presents some of the findings of such simulations of the evolution of structure in the Universe, from the cosmic web formed by Dark Matter to the formation and evolution of galaxies within that web, all illustrated with animations produced by the simulations.

Dr. Michel Tremmel attained his bachelor's degree in Physics and Mathematics from Northwestern University in 2011. He then attained his PhD in Astronomy from the University of Washington, Seattle, in 2017. After earning his PhD he was awarded the Yale Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship, at Yale University, and in 2020 he was a recipient of a National Science Foundation Astronomy and Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship, also at Yale.
In January 2023 he started a new position as Lecturer in Theoretical Astrophysics, teaching Galactic and Extragalactic Astrophysics, at University College Cork (UCC), Ireland.
His expertise is in large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations to study the formation and co-evolution of galaxies and supermassive black holes (SMBHs). His work involves studying the dynamical evolution of SMBHs within galaxies to make predictions for gravitational wave detections, as well as predicting how SMBHs affect the evolution of their host galaxies and vice versa.
