The 2025 Abel Prize award ceremony

In a magnificent ceremony His Majesty King Harald V of Norway handed over The Abel Prize for 2025 to Professor Masaki Kashiwara, Kyoto University in Japan, at the University of Oslo`s Ceremonial Hall the 20 th of May.

Enthusiasts of science and art were gathered to homage one of the most prominent scientists of the world, when Masaki Kashiwara was awarded the Abel Prize 2025 for his impressive achievements in algebraic analysis and representation theory.

The Armed Forces' staff band opened the ceremony with The Abel fanfare composed by Klaus Sandvik. Master of Ceremony: Haddy Njie, TV presenter and author.

A film presenting Masaki Kashiwara`s life was shown for the audience.

His Majesty the King presented the Abel Prize to Professor Masaki Kashiwara before the laureate Kashiwara from KUIAS and RIMS, Kyoto University, held his acceptance speech.

President of The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters Annelin Eriksen, Chair of the Abel Committee, Professor Helge Holden, the Minister of Research and Higher Education Sigrun Aasland, the Mayor of Oslo, Anne Lindboe and rector Svein Stølen at the University of Oslo was also present.

Musical performance: Peter Baden, Astrid Garmo and Liv Lande played «Fantasia Abel», a specially composed piece by the composer and percussionist Peter Baden, and the Japanese traditional koto «Haru no Umi».

Baden is known for his unique interaction between music and technology. Violinist Astrid Garmo plays Norwegian folk music blended with modern expressions on harding fiddle. Liv Lande plays Koto, a Japanese stringed instrument with a long history.

Young musical talents from Barratt Due Institute of Music, The Vigore Quartet (Birk Bostrup, Harri Li, Eivind Skeie and Randi Winnem Tvedt) played « Holberg suite (Allegro)» of Edvard Grieg and «Woodworks», Danish String Quartet.
