Anteaters are unusual mammals from the anteater family, feeding primarily on ants and termites. Their main "weapon" for obtaining food is an extremely long and thin tongue. Species like the giant anteater have tongues that can reach 50–60 centimeters, and their surface is coated with thick, sticky saliva, which helps insects adhere instantly. The tongue can move at extremely high speeds—up to 150 times per minute.
Sometimes you might hear the fantastical idea that an anteater could stick its tongue into a human stomach and extract food. However, from a human anatomy and physiology perspective, this is virtually impossible. Food enters the stomach through a special muscular tube called the esophagus. Its walls constantly perform wave-like contractions, known as peristalsis, which direct food only toward the stomach.
Even if we imagine a purely hypothetical situation in which an anteater's tongue were to end up in a human esophagus, it would cause severe irritation of the mucous membrane. Esophageal tissue is very sensitive and easily damaged by mechanical force. Furthermore, the stomach contains an aggressive environment—gastric juice, which contains hydrochloric acid with a pH of approximately 1.5–3. Contact of the tongue with this acid could cause chemical irritation of the tissue.
If the tongue were to somehow catch a piece of undigested food and begin to pull it out, gastric juice could also rise up with it. If it reaches the upper digestive tract, it can cause a severe burning sensation in the throat and mouth, since the mucous membranes of these areas are less protected from acid than the stomach lining.
Therefore, such a situation is more in the realm of fantasy. In reality, the human anatomical structure and the body's protective reflexes—coughing, gagging, and esophageal spasms—almost completely exclude the possibility of foreign objects entering the stomach in this way.
