Sai Kung - home to Hong Kong's most dangerous beach?
Hong Kong is not just one of the world's best known cities; it is 75% countryside with sweeping beaches, lush mountains and coastal bays. Sai Wan is a remote beach in Sai Kung, a quaint village east of Hong Kong. As well as Sai Wan, Sai Kung acts as a travel hub for people who want to visit Sai Wan beach, Long Ke Wan beach, Kiu Tsui beach, Millionaire's beach, Hap Mun Wan beach, Hoi Ha Wan beach, Tai Long Wan beach and Trio Beach.
As the global pandemic continues, and borders in Asia remain shut, many Hong Kongers are looking increasingly inwards at what the countryside of Hong Kong has to offer. Sai Kung and its surrounding beaches are booming with an influx of local tourists keen to escape the city life through beach days, jungle hikes or rock-climbing. But with this, people are taking risks. There have been a number of local deaths now due to heat exhaustion or people taking unecessary risks. Has Sai Wan become Hong Kong's most dangerous beach?
We set out to find out.
After a short walk around Sai Kung, we take a taxi to Hong Kong pavilion and set out on the trail from the pavilion to Sai Wan. Once there we check out the beach, rock pool and facilities. Is it safe? What facilities are there? What do you need to take with you?
Sai Kung Town (Chinese: 西貢市) or simply Sai Kung (Chinese: 西貢) is a town on Sai Kung Peninsula, facing Sai Kung Hoi (Inner Port Shelter), part of Sai Kung District in the New Territories, Hong Kong. Sai Kung is the central hub of nearby surrounding villages, and hence the name may also refer to the areas in its immediate surroundings.
