Tawny owl Luna
Luna is currently brooding four precious eggs (these are particularly dear to her due to her past losses) and her hormones are primed to protect, so when Jeff enters the nest she makes short shrift of the intruder.
Luna fiercely defends nest
But Jeff, a young male kestrel, is foolish enough to attempt a second attack. This time Luna turns on the persistent kestrel with double the fury. Her wings obscure the action from the camera, but the next day Jeff has blood on his feathers.
Tawny owl vs kestrel
The size difference between this fiercely protective owl and juvenile kestrel is noticeable . Tawny owls are among the UK's largest, and heftiest owls. They have rounded, powerful bodies that can weigh up to 800g. In comparison the average male kestrel weighs roughly 250g.

Thankfully all is well
Thankfully, it seems the tawny owl eggs are all unharmed. And kestrel Jeff is seen later, still in one piece. Hopefully he’ll think twice before taking on a tawny owl again!
