Reports came in around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday that a large vessel crashed into a column in the central part of the bridge carrying north and southbound lanes of Interstate 695, catching on fire before causing multiple vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below.
Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said at a news conference said the first units to arrive reported a “complete collapse” of the Key bridge. Two people were rescued from the water with one person seriously injured. Authorities say multiple agencies are conducting search and rescue efforts by air and water, which are expected to last throughout the day.
