There is perhaps no other engine that has more myths and mystery surrounding it than the Jaguar
V-12. And some of it may actually be true. But I'm going to share the disassembly of two client engines and hopefully this series will go a long way toward de-mystifying this engine and perhaps encourage you adventurous types to do your own V-12 disassembly and attempt the V-12 overhaul.
V-12 disassembly is not a race to get the engine apart so you can move on to the "fun stuff". Important forensic work can be done during the disassembly process. Engine operating conditions and degree of maintenance can be determined by color and surface finish of various parts and type and thickness of chemical deposits.
A V-12 overhaul, like any journey, begins with the first step and disassembly is an important part of the process In some cases, a person experienced in V-12 restoration can make a decision as to whether the engine is rebuildable in a cost effective manner before they even pick up a micrometer.
And contrary to the title, I DO actually enjoy working on the Jaguar V-12, it's just that the older I get, the less I enjoy getting greasy dirty. The re-assembly is much more fun. Welcome to Hell Week!!
