The thrilling Beehive Trail in Acadia National Park in Maine ascends a nearly vertical 450ft exposed cliff, via scrambling and iron rung climbing.
Starting from the Sand Beach parking lot, cross the park loop road, enter the Bowl Trail, and hike 0.2mi up the rocky creek up to the intersection with the Beehive Trail. From there, a mere 0.2mi or so more and you'll start to scale the steep cliff! The trail includes plenty of iron rungs for your hands and feet -- similar to a via ferrata -- easing the climb to be somewhere between a ladder climb and a class 3 scramble -- likely a class 4 without the rungs!
While short (450ft up over 0.6mi), it's still physical demanding on your full body, and of course those with a fear of heights should stay away! Those with extreme fear of heights should perhaps not even watch this video.
The last stretch to the summit is more gradual, reaching 520ft elevation, and to complete the loop you'll descend to The Bowl (pond) and down a much less steep, more traditional trail back to Sand Beach. Take care, stay safe, don't do something silly like holding a camera in your hand while climbing, and enjoy Acadia and Mount Desert Island!
