If you're in the USA, you'll need to change your keyboard layout from the UK default to USA layout.
How to change your keyboard: type in "sudo raspi-config" then choose change keyboard layout. Next choose your keyboard and then choose "Other" and find English (US). Just choose defaults for the next few options. Then type "sudo reboot" for the changes to take effect.
